May 06 2009 NGC 3324, Gabriela Mistral nebula |

|
Located in the constellation Carina, NGC 3324, aka Gabriela Mistral nebula, is an emission nebula with an active star-forming region. Energetic outflows of ultraviolet radiation from hot young stars are eroding the dense outer portions of the star-forming region, uncovering EGGs by a process called photoevaporation. EGGs, short for evaporating gaseous globules, are dense regions of mostly molecular hydrogen gas that fragment and gravitationally collapse to form stars.
NGC 3324 is known as the Gabriela Mistral nebula for its the striking resemblance to Chilean Nobel Prize poet, Gabriel Mistral, who was born and raised in the Elqui region, home to the Cerro Tololo, Cerro Pachon, and Cerro Morado professional observatories. |
