The Lagoon Nebula, a pool of stars in the making

The Lagoon Nebula, also known as Messier 8 (M8) and NGC 6523, is a bright an beautiful star-forming region located in Sagittarius. Stars continue to form in this giant cloud of interstellar matter that is about 110 by 50 light years in size. In addition to young stars and gas clouds, the nebula contains a number of Bok globules - dark, collapsing clouds of protostellar material.
