Between The Cross And The Keel.

Although the Southern Cross has been pictured in the heavens for centuries, it's easy to see how the current boundaries of Crux were carved out of Centaurus. A few degrees to the west, we see part of another ancient constellation. Carina, the Keel, is one of three main parts of the broken-up Argo Navis, the ship of Jason.

In the narrow part of Centaurus, which is wedged between these two, lies a fascinating complex of nebulosity, clustered around Lambda Centauri. Visible in this image is IC2944 to the upper-right, Vdb121 and the Collinder249 cluster in the center, and IC2948 at lower-left. The binary here appears to have blasted a hole in the nebula close to it, forming a vague bubble. This entire area carries the designation of RCW62.

Imaged with Australian GRAS scope, four 75-second exposures each LRGB channel, binned 2X2, for a total of 20 minutes. Calibrated and pre-processed with Maxim, stacked with DSS, final processing with Photoshop.
