May 21 2010 Strong Sun Pillar |

|
I was going to the Arrábida mountain range in Setúbal, about 35km from Lisbon, Portugal, for a shoot session of the Moon, when I stopped to watch a beautiful sunset and noticed a strong Sun Pillar, was really amazing, i never see anything else like this, because he was tall and white and could be seen perfectly, even in the High sky.
"After the sun has set it still illuminates high clouds in the west. These almost horizontal or even slightly upward going (from atmospheric refraction) rays illuminate the lower crystal faces. Theyreflect downwards to form a strong upper pillar. Watch a pillar strengthen after sunset (the reduced glare and skylight also helps make the pillar more apparent) and creep slowly northward following the sun hidden below the horizon"- from Amtospheric Optics - http://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/pillalt1.htm
