Comet 17P Holmes and the California Nebula (NGC1499)

Notable Periodic Comet in 2007 when it brightened by a factor of about half a million, in what is known as the largest known outburst by a comet. It became visible to naked eye in the night sky as a bright yellow "star" in the Constellation Perseus. In October 2007 it appeared to be more coma-like due to the outburst. In this view, it was passing above NGC 1499 in the constellation Perseus in March, about 4 months after the original outburst.
